How to Bury a Coaxial Cable

There are many reasons you may need to bury a coaxial cable. One reason, and probably the most important, is its unsightly appearance in your yard. Another reason is that it presents a safety hazard and may cause you to trip over it, or pull your TV or satellite dish down if friction is encountered. Lastly, by burying it, you protect it from damage, effectively maintaining your cable connection. Before you tend to this little job, there are some precautions to take.

  1. First: Buy the right cable

Make sure you purchase a cable that you can bury without compromising the cable's integrity, preferably a water-proof cable that contains a water-blocking compound between the shield and the jacket. This acts as extra-protection in the advent of damage to the outer jacket. If the cable resides in a driveway or other place of high traffic, you should put PVC piping down first to protect the cable. The underground cable should not have any breaks to ensure proper performance.

  2. Second: Plan the burial path

Determine the best route for the cable to avoid any future disruptions. It is a good idea to draw a diagram of this path and save it with your home documents for two good reasons. First, to remind yourself where the cable is located if any changes are needed, and second, to present to any buyers when you are ready to sell your home for a very professional–looking presentation.

  3. Third: Bury the cable

Dig a ditch about six inches deep, at an angle, placing the cable in as you go. As you complete each foot, place the cable down as far as possible and then replace the dirt and sod. Take care not to cut the cable as you dig. Continue this until the entire length of cable needed is buried. Afterwards, make sure the ends are connected properly. You can now enjoy peace of mind knowing that your cable is well-protected.
